Imagine yourself in a boat or ship with narrow alleys, carrying your M16 rifle while clearing every room while making sure that the suspects will be all accounted and cleared. At the same time, you are trying to keep your balance as angry waves keep on banging the ship you have just boarded.

Certainly, the difficulty of team movement in such tight, narrow rooms and alleys presents a life and death situation.

As a security officer, you need to perform law enforcement functions and at the same time ensure your and your teams’ safety. In such a scenario, most security officers may use their flexibility and utilize their handguns in lieu of the assault rifle.

It will work, yes, if the situation is non-hostile and the subjects are cooperative, or if you are very certain that they are not armed. (However, in training, it was always emphasized and instilled to us that we must always assume the worst.)

To solve the problem comes the solution in the form of TAVOR CTAR 21 from the Israel Weapon Industries-IWI (formerly Israel Military Industries-IMI).

Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) Tavor CTAR-21

The IWI Tavor TAR-21 is an Israeli assault rifle designed to be more effective in urban or close-quarter combat than the M16 series but still be able to be as effective at a range as the M16.

In order to accomplish this, the rifle utilizes a bullpup design that shortens the weapon by 300mm in the standard models. There exist even shorter carbine models.

Bullpup rifles are configured in a layout in which the bolt carrier group is placed behind the pistol grip; this shortens the overall length but does not sacrifice barrel length.

The T.A.R. 21 provides carbine length, but rifle muzzle velocity. The bullpup design is also used to minimize the silhouette of soldiers and to maximize effectiveness in turning corners in urban and close-quarter warfare.

The name “T.A.R. 21” stands for “Tavor Assault Rifle – 21st Century”. The T.A.R. 21 is an Israeli bullpup assault rifle chambered for 5.56 x 45mm NATO ammunition with a selective fire system.
